KOLKATA: The Shyampukur police have arrested a youth — identified as Swarnabha Ghosh alias Rahul — for allegedly running a college admission racket. He used to demand capitation fees from admission seekers and their kin despite the system going entirely online.
Ghosh had sought Rs 35,000 from a candidate, Rohit Sonkar, for admission in the BCom (Honours) course at Seth Anandram Jaipuria College.
Police said a second FIR was filed against the accused at the same police station earlier.
“Ghosh would introduce himself as the sports secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad. However, he has no links with the college. He left the college college three years ago. We are ascertaining if he was part of the student union back then,” an officer said.
“His father runs a cyber café and a print shop next to the college on Raja Naba Krishna Street. He would track the admission seekers and then try to extract money from them. After the complaint, he was on the run. He had gone to Cuttack. We arrested him on Friday when he returned home after running out of money,” said an investigating officer.
Last year, the cops had arrested six persons involved in such admission frauds in Kolkata.
