KOLKATA: A retired engineer from north Bengal was duped of Rs 57,546 when he ordered liquor from an unverified website on August 12. A case of cheating has been registered at Survey Park police station against an unknown caller.
Police said Anupam Bose had used the website for the first time following the suggestion of his friends who visited his house off EM Bypass in the evening.
“The victim, who called a number provided on the website to place the order, did not realise that he was sharing his personal banking details,” said a senior officer.
Around 7.30pm, Bose called a number to get liquor delivered to his house, but the call went unanswered. After a while, he received a call from another number — 8824413140 — and the caller said the liquor shop was closed for Eid. He, however, said he could deliver the liquor to Bose’s doorstep instead.
“The caller insisted on Bose paying with his card. The victim shared his card details, along with OTPs, and later discovered that the huge amount had been withdrawn from his account,” said an officer.
