KOLKATA: Four men on two bikes, chasing and tormenting a young couple on another bike on Lake Gardens flyover around 11.30pm on Thursday, backed away after a businessman, Sudipta Sankar Bhaduri, and a south Kolkata minister’s son travelling in a beacon-fitted car stopped before them and threatened to call the cops.
As the duo took the Lake Gardens flyover from Southern Avenue, they found a couple on a bike passing by their car.
Behind them were four men on two bikes, who overtook the car from two sides and started passing lewd comments at the couple. While two youths from the right extended their hands to touch the woman seated behind, another on the left started consuming alcohol in the open.
“We began chasing the bikes. The girl seemed helpless and the youth tried to speed ahead to escape the four. We sped ahead and stopped our car in front of the bikes on the middle of the Lake Gardens Flyover blocking the path of the accused and asked them the reason behind chasing the couple,” said Bhaduri.
“Kaku apnar problem ki? Chupchap bari jaan (uncle what’s your problem. Go home without making much noise)” was the reply from one of them. The girl then reportedly jumped off the bike and came running to Bhaduri and told him that the men on bikes had been chasing them for a while and pleaded before him for help.
Bhaduri’s friend then threatened to call the police and began pressing the car horn alerting the cops on duty at an outpost, some 100m ahead. “That is when one of the youths possibly noticed the beacon of our car and realized the cops had also started approaching us. They quickly took a U-turn and sped towards Southern Avenue, before we could note down the registration numbers,” added Bhaduri.
