KOLKATA: The city on Friday saw the seventh deceased organ donation this year, and the second one in four days, in which the liver was retrieved and transplated from a brain-dead patient who was suffering from chronic kidney disease.
Suresh Dutta Roy, the donor from Sodepur, was brought to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals a few days ago after he had suffered an intracranial haemorrhage.
The 48-year-old suffered brain death during the course of treatment and his family, after being counselled, consented to the donation.
The liver was transplanted on a 56-year-old recipient from Dum Dum in a late-night surgery, which was done by a team of the hospital’s Institute of Gastro Science and Liver. The heart was not fit enough for transplant.
“Another donation in a gap of just four days is a very positive sign for the organ donation movement,” said Captain VM Swamy of Bengal Organ Donation Society. Despite the late start, there has been three donations in August. This was also the third deceased liver transplant in Apollo in a week.
