BANDEL: A 27-year-old unemployed youth killed his grandmother and attempted to murder his parents shortly after midnight at his family home in Hooghly’s Bandel on Sunday. Accused Indraneel Ray told police that he had tried to capture his murder spree live on Facebook. But police cross-checked and found his claim was untrue. He was arrested, charged with murder and remanded in police custody for three days.
In his confessional statement to police, Indraneel said: “I have been appearing in several competitive exams but am yet to get a job.
My parents and grandmother would keep pestering me to study for more competitive exams to get a job. They never left me in peace. So, I decided to kill them.” Ray, incidentally, appeared in one such competitive exam on Sunday itself.
His father Biswajit and mother Tapasi told police that Indraneel started behaving abnormally after midnight. “He suddenly picked up a rod and started beating my 80-year-old mother Arati with it. She fell off the bed and started bleeding profusely. We tried to rescue her but he beat me with the rod too. My wife and I somehow managed to escape through the back door and took shelter at a neighbour’s house,” a sobbing Biswajit told police.
Around 12.30am on Monday, Ray’s neighbours heard loud screams from their house. His parents were crying for help to save them. They rushed to the Ray home and saw the lights were on. Soon, they spotted Indraneel inside a ground floor room with a blood-stained iron rod.
On seeing the neighbours, he came towards the door. Without opening it, he shouted from inside, “I’ve killed my grandmother. Now, I will kill you people too.” The onlookers immediately informed Chinsurah police station. A team led by IC Nirupam Ghosh reached the house and broke open the door. After the accused was confined to a room cops Arati lying in a pool of blood. Later, she was declared dead at a Chinsurah hospital.
Finding Indraneel visibly ferocious, cops tied his hands and feet and brought him to Chinsurah police station. His initial statements lacked consistency. Finally, he confessed to his crime.
IC Ghosh said: “The youth is mentally sound but displayed abnormal behaviour during interrogation. He was frustrated. We will investigate the case further.”
