Kolkata: Water cut-off won’t hit southern suburbs

Behala, Garden Reach, Ekbalpore and Kidderpore will remain unaffected when the water supply to most parts of south Kolkata is shut down on Wednesday. The shifting of a water pipeline along the Majherhat bridge has necessitated the move, which will lead to a day-long suspension of water supply to Jadavpur, Tollygunge, Bhowanipore, Golf Green, Chetla and Jodhpur Park.

KOLKATA: Behala, Garden Reach, Ekbalpore and Kidderpore will remain unaffected when the water supply to most parts of south Kolkata is shut down on Wednesday. The shifting of a water pipeline along the Majherhat bridge has necessitated the move, which will lead to a day-long suspension of water supply to Jadavpur, Tollygunge, Bhowanipore, Golf Green, Chetla and Jodhpur Park. The affected boroughs include 8, 9, 10 and 11.
Last month, too, water supply had been cut off to south Kolkata and the flow had later been slow due to a repair job.
Though shutting the water supply down in the peak of summer will cause inconvenience, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) claimed it can’t be helped. “The PWD has been asking for it to help them complete the reconstruction of Majherhat bridge. We have been deferring it, but now have to shut down the water since it is holding up the work on the bridge,” said a water supply department official.
The supply will, however, be restored within 24 hours, said KMC officials. “While a major part of south Kolkata will go dry on Wednesday, Behala, Garden Reach and Kiddrpore will have normal supply,” the official said.
He conceded that water supply has been affected on several occasions in the recent past to facilitate construction. In March, supply had been cut off to north and central Kolkata to allow construction of a Metro ventilation shaft.
