Work for drainage and road floods Behala

Work for drainage and road floods Behala
Truncated auto services, suspended bus routes and unavailability of cabs made situation tougher for residents
KOLKATA: The day-long heavy showers left Behala residents holed up inside their homes. With the festivals approaching, most people had to cancel their shopping plans.
Unlike other areas of the city where water levels receded on Saturday morning after a brief respite from the downpour, most of the localities in Behala remained inundated under knee-deep water till afternoon.
An incomplete drainage upgrade project worsened the waterlogging scenario for residents of Silpara, Sarsuna, Parnasree and areas located off James Long Sarani.

This is not the first time in the recent past that Behala has suffered. Last year, too, this zone was often flooded when rain water had drained away from the rest of the city. This probably calls for some Behala-specific solutions.

Truncated auto services, suspended bus routes and unavailability of cabs made situation tougher for residents.
Durjyo Chattopadhyay, a resident of B G Press Colony area, couldn’t even go to the local market to procure vegetables for the week. “Usually, I visit the market on Saturday. But, the fish seller, who has my number saved with him, informed us that most of the shops don’t have vegetables and fish due to the heavy rainfall,” he said.
At Netaji Pally near Barisha, water pumps had to be pressed into service to suck the rising level of water out. “My house is situated at a much convenient location compared to other low-lying areas of Behala. But on Saturday morning, even my locality was flooded after the downpour,” said Ajay Mukherjee, a resident of Kartik Das Road.

Areas in Thakur Pukur and link roads between Diamond Harbour Road and James Long Sarani remained inundated since Friday night. A canal that runs adjacent to James Long Sarani and opens up in Siridi is overflowing and flooding the homes in the locality as a stretch has been filled up for road-construction work. Residents of Purba Para, Kadamtala, Gournagar and Das Para have been left in the lurch. Suman Dhawa, a resident of Purba Para, said there’s knee-deep water at the ground floor of his house. Dhawa was holidaying in Mandarmani with his friends and had to cut short his trip and return as his ageing parents were at home.
Arijit Sen, a resident of Kadamtala, said, “I had to skip office as water has entered our house. I’m working from home.”
Areas under ward number 124 of KMC in Behala East were inundated after the rain. The situation has worsened, claimed residents of Ramakrishna Nagar, one of the localities hit after Friday evening’s deluge.
