MALAPPURAM: Child welfare authorities are likely to ask police to take action against the mother and grandmother of a three-year-old girl, who was allegedly beaten up and denied food. Childline authorities had on Monday rescued the girl with injuries on her body, indicating that the child was badly beaten up.
She was living with her mother, grandmother and three siblings in Poongod colony near Vaniyambalam in Kalikavu, and was rescued based on complaints from residents.
Childline also rescued two boys, aged 9 and 6, and a two-year-old girl from their house. They have been shifted to shelter homes.
Preliminary inquiry has revealed that the child's grandmother used to beat her up and deprive her of proper food. Childline workers have found injury marks on the child's neck and forehead and she was in a state of malnourishment.
As police are yet to register suo moto case, child welfare authorities are planning to recommend police to take legal action against those who are responsible for the ill-treatment of the child. However, Kalikavu sub-inspector P J Kuriakose, said the preliminary investigation reveals that the child was not assaulted.
But CWC authorities disagree with the police version. Chairman of CWC Shajesh Bhasker said that the medical examination revealed that the child was tortured. “We have already sought detailed report regarding the incident, from juvenile police unit in Malappuram and district child protection unit. We will ask police to register case if needed, after receiving the reports,” he said.
