LUCKNOW: In the 10th hit-and-run case reported this year, a 30-year-old man was crushed to death by a speeding SUV on Sunday. The driver of the SUV, owner of a snooker parlour owner in Bazaarkhala area ws drunk. The deceased was identified as Wahid Ali, a resident of Sheetal Kheda in Aishbagh, who ran a tea stall.
Police arrested SUV driver Pravesh Sharma (30), ran a snooker-parlour in Bhawaniganj area of Aishbagh.
He was drunk while driving. It was the tenth hit-and-run case this year, said police.
"Ali had closed his tea stall at around 1.10am on Sunday and was going home on foot when a speeding SUV ran over him near Aishbagh flyover", said SHO Bazaarkhala, Vijendra Singh.
Singh also said that the impact of the accident was such that the body of Ali got trapped in the bumper of the SUV and got dragged for about 500 meters before being smashed by a divider.
Seeing the incident, some of the commuters ran after the SUV, to catch hold of the driver while others while others took the critically injured Ali to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead, said police. However, Ali was nabbed by the police at Aishbagh police- outpost, added Singh.
"We nabbed Sharma and also took him to KGMU for a medical in which his alcohol intake was proven," added the SHO.
"The police have still not been able to enforce no-druken driving in the city as it not only grapples with lack of breath-analyzers but also lacks numbers to get proper enforcement," said Nadeem, uncle of the deceased.
