LUCKNOW: A male friend of deceased dental science student Priya Singh was booked for her murder on Wednesday, the possible motive being a conflict of interest over a marriage proposal.
Accused Prakash Chandra Arya (27) — a government employee — has been reported missing since Monday night. His family members have told police that the youth wanted to marry Priya, but she was adamant about completing her degree first.

This, they said, had strained the relationship between the two who knew each other since 2009.
However, the victim’s family has claimed, in an FIR lodged on Wednesday, that Prakash had been harassing the student.
Priya, a third-year student, was found dead on her bed at her Nilmatha home in Cantonment thana area on Tuesday morning. There was a strangulation mark on her neck and the door was latched from outside.
Police had seized two phones and a tablet that belonged to the student and whose contents had been deleted.
Forensic experts managed to retrieve some text messages from the phones, which helped investigators zero in on Prakash, a resident of Durgapuri Colony, also in Cantonment area.

Cantonment circle officer Tanu Upadhyay said two more mobile phone handsets had been recovered from the victim’s house and these belonged to Prakash.
“The location details of the phones suggest that the accused was close to her house around 8pm on Monday,” the officer said. Preliminary probe had suggested Priya was killed between 10pm and midnight.
Cantonment SHO Ranjana Sachan said the postmortem report released on Wednesday evening nailed internal head injuries as the cause of the student’s death.
“The injury could have been caused by an accidental fall or a blow from a heavy object. An attempt was made to make the murder appear as suicide, which is why a dupatta was found hanging from the ceiling fan,” Sachan said.
The SHO said family members of Prakash had lodged a missing persons report at Cantonment thana at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
“They have said the victim and the accused knew each other well. In fact, the accused wanted to marry her. The victim, however, wanted to complete her studies first. There was a conflict of interest,” Sachan quoted Prakash’s family as saying.
Priya’s untimely death has left her friends and teachers in a state of deep shock. Her professor Gadiputi Sridhar said, “She was a bright student, an asset to this college. Even patients were fond of her. We had hoped that after receiving her degree, she would join us as a faculty member,” he said.
Neighbours too described Priya as a cheerful and studious girl. The family, they said, had relocated from Gopalganj in Bihar to Lucknow a decade ago for Priya’s higher education. Those who had met her on Monday evening said there was “nothing unusual” about her behaviour.
