Residents rush out of their homes after the incident and gas agency workers repair the pipeline on Thursday
LUCKNOW: Panic gripped an upscale locality in Gomtinagar after a domestic gas pipeline burst following a car crash on Thursday. No causalty was reported in the incident. Police said Mohammed Shakil, a realtor who lives in Vikas Khand, returned home around 8.30pm and was about to park his car inside his compound.
However, he accelerated instead of braking and the car hit the gas pipeline next to his kitchen wall.
Realising what had happened, Shakil reversed within seconds.
The crash caused the pipeline to burst. The loud noise, like a fire cracker’s, led to panic. The smell of leaking gas and the noise forced residents out of their homes. The area was cordoned off and police were called.
Sub-inspector Shalini Sahay informed the fire service and warned people against lighting any match. She got the gas supply cut off and called up the private agency in charge of the pipeline.
“Apart from minor eye irritation and breathing difficulties, people did not experience discomfort, said chief fire officer VK Singh.
The situation was controlled in an hour and the agency was repairing the pipeline, he added. However, residents expressed anger over the agency’s lackadaisical respense. Retired forest officer RS Mishra said he called up the agency manager several times but the latter did not respond.
