Reliving Summer of 1969 at AGPC

LUCKNOW: It was a walk down memory lane for these 20 women in their late 60s who had all turned schoolgirls for an evening.
Students of the first batch of Awadh Girls PG College-which graduated in 1969-had gathered in their college for the golden jubilee reunion after 50 years.
Sharing greetings, hugs, laughs and memories, they recalled the names they had given to each other lovingly in college and sang and danced on old songs.

"We used to bunk classes to watch movies in Mayfair and Udyan theatres. That was followed by 'paan' treats in Hazratganj," recalls Nirmala Tambe, working as a consultant in the Central Board of Secondary Education.
She is quick to add, "But along with the fun, we concentrated on studies too."
Supriya Kidwai recalls how girls then used to smuggle 'puri sabzi' made by the famous vendor Suraj Bali in Hazratganj. "We were prohibited from eating his puris because the shop was situated near a drain, but we used to send a girl each day to get puris," she said.

Joy Chaudhary, another alumna, said, "I wonder if any other batch enjoyed as much we did. We often used to skip classes and roam around the campus but would study till late hours and get good marks".
Recalling an incident, Anita Kocher said, "Once a few girls got chickenpox. We were barred from visiting them in hostels. But we used to jump the boundary walls to provide them classroom notes."
The alumnae also fondly remembered their principal Mother Bernadina, an Irish nun, and teachers who helped them prepare for bigger roles in life.
