Lucknow: Woman files FIR against husband after triple talaq

LUCKNOW: Days after the Central government brought an ordinance criminalising instant triple talaq, a 27-year-old woman from Ram Nagar area in the state capital claimed that her husband of 12 years gave her triple talaq on Thursday night. The woman lodged an FIR on Saturday.
Meena, a mother of two children, lodged an FIR against her husband Muharram Ali at the Mahila Thana in Hazratganj police station on Saturday under sections of IPC attributed to cruelty by husband, miscarriage without woman’s consent, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.The woman claimed she was being physically and mentally tortured by her husband who made monetary demands.
“Initially, there were no issues between us. But he started beating me since last three-four years. He demanded Rs 5 lakh and tortured me. I had two miscarriages due to beatings. Last year, he gave me an electric shock following which I again had a miscarriage and went to my mother’s home. When my family asked me to reconcile I went back to him but last month I had another miscarriage when he thrashed me,” said Meena, who came to the police station with her brother Siraj.
“On Thursday night, he pronounced talaq thrice by taking my name. When I went to the mosque’s Imam, he said that the divorce is done. I want justice and punishment for him. I don’t want reconciliation.” Meena and Muharram have two children, a 12-yearold daughter and a seven-yearold son, who are with Meena.
“An FIR under sections 498 A (cruelty by husband), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 313 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC has been registered against the man. Some medical records have been presented which are being checked. The ordinance on triple talaq has not reached us so we cannot frame charges on triple talaq as of now,” informed Mahila thana in charge Sharda Chowdhary. When asked if they knew that triple talaq has been made illegal, Meena’s brother Siraj said, “We don’t need an Imam to tell us that if a man says ‘talaq’ three times taking the wife’s name, their relationship ends. Itne toh hum qaabil hain hi(We know this much at least).”
