Dhillon’s term ends this month, PAU board to meet today
Ludhiana: A meeting of the Punjab Agricultural University board is scheduled to be held on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the issue of appointment of the new vice-chancellor. Incumbent Baldev Singh Dhillon will be completing his second term on June 30. He will attain the age of 72 on June 27.
As per the statute rules, two terms are permissible for any officer of PAU.
As per the PAU Act, the board can appoint vice-chancellor under the provisions of Section 15, which state that it may take up the matter on its own or elect a screening committee of three persons. They would shortlist two candidates and propose a unanimous name to the chancellor, that is the Punjab Governor.
The mode of selection and the tenure of appointment have to be on a par with ICAR Model Act, 2009. As per the Act and the Punjab government policy, maximum age limit is 70 years and 65 years, respectively. “No service rule of Punjab or the Central government provides extension beyond 70 years,” ICAR rule states.
UGC/ICAR and other Central bodies governing universities have issued maximum age bar of 70 years. As per the PAU Act and statute, PAU V-C can hold office for four years and is eligible for re-appointment (second term) after following the same procedure as being done for the fresh one.
