Erring units still without NOC

Erring units still without NOC
Ludhiana: Despite several fire incidents in the past three months, no action has been taken against the erring units where adequate fire safety arrangements are not made. The units where fire incidents took place in the past still lack NOC from fire department.
Most of the fire incidents which took placea in the past few months kept the firemen on toes for 12 to 18 hours at a stretch.
Roughly only 2% of the industrial units have obtained NOC from fire department.
The fire officials claimed that when they go to douse flames, owners of the industrial units do not even warn them about things like chemicals or fuel kept inside, which increases the chances of fatalities. They added that if factory owners make necessary arrangements, they can save a lot of time on dousing fire.
Meanwhile, when contacted the assistant divisional fire officer (ADFO) Bhupinder Singh Sandhu said, “We have made the seniors aware about the condition of industrial units in the city and about this incident as well. Action can be taken only when we get directions from the head of our directorate.” He said they were instructed to check coaching centres, malls and other public place after Surat coaching centre tragedy, but due to many fire incidents taking place, they could not get time for inspection. Sandhu said since the Fire Safety and Prevention Act has not been implemented till date, they cannot take any action.
However, the MC commissioner K P Brar said, “Action can still be taken against the erring units. All we need is the ADFO’s recommendation for the same.”
Mayor Balkar Sandhu said, “I will take up the matter with local bodies minister Brahm Mohindra so that in future such incidents are averted.”
