LUDHIANA: The Model Town police have arrested a man and his son for betting on matches of ongoing
Tamil Nadu Premier League. It was alleged that the accused duo was running a racket from their residence at White Quarters in Dhuri Lines area.
During interrogation the accused revelaed the names of three accomplices who were also booked. The police have also recovered Rs 1.34 lakh cash, 13 mobile phones and a tablet.
The arrested accused have been identified as Raj Kumar (50) and Himanshu Malhotra (25). The accomplices of the duo who are yet to be arrested have been identified as Ramesh Kapoor of Muradpura, Kaku of Haibowal and Toni of Islamgunj.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-III) Gurpreet Kaur Purewal said they arrested the accused following a tip-off on Wednesday night. ADCP Purewal said, “Earlier the bookies used to bet on international matches and
Indian Premier League (IPL). Now they have started inviting bets on lesser known and state-level
cricket tournaments also.”
According to police, the accused Raj Kumar is already facing trial in several cases of accepting bids on cricket matches. A case under sections 13A/3/67 of Gambling Act and sections 420 and 120-B of the
Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused at Model Town police station.
