Gurwinder Singh dies as gun goes off inside police station
PATIALA: Gurwinder Singh, head munshi posted at the Chhajli police station in Sangrur district died after one of the guns he was cleaning went off accidentally early on Thursday morning.
SHO Deepinder Singh said Gurwinder had been working on the guns inside the ammunition room at the police stations when a gun accidentally went off. The bullet hit Gurwinder from a very close range and he died on the spot.
Surprisingly, it is the third incident in the last one year when a policeman died of accidental fire inside the police station.

Last year in September, constable Ranjit Singh (51), posted as ‘night munshi’ at Sangrur City police station, died when an AK-47 rifle he was holding went off after it fell from his hands as he rose from his chair. In August, head constable Manjinder Singh (50) in the same police station, died after he reportedly fainted in the bathroom and lost control over his carbine, which went off as it fell on the floor.
Deepinder said it was unfortunate that all three incidents took place while he was holding the charge of the station house officer. He said after the previous incidents, he had even helped the family members of the deceased policemen get jobs in the department on compensatory grounds.
DSP Dirbha Yogesh Kumar said a departmental probe has been ordered into the incident.
