Ludhiana: Police arrested a person after recovering fake currency worth Rs 1.25 lakh from his possession on Thursday afternoon. The accused was identified as Sanjeev Kumar, 40, a resident of Dhandoli Kalan in Dirbha of Sangrur district.
Police said a team of Jodhan police was patrolling in Sarabha area when they received a tip-off informing that a person is coming to the area carrying fake currency.
After getting the information, the police party set up a checkpost on the road near Sarabha village and started checking for suspicious vehicles and persons.
The police party later saw a person coming on motorcycle and stopped him on suspicion. While frisking the accused, police recovered fake currency worth Rs.1.25 lakh of Rs 2000 denomination from his possession.
Jodhan police station SHO Inderpal Singh said the accused was booked under Section 489-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (Using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes) and was arrested.
Police officials said during preliminary investigation, the accused divulged that he has dealing with fake currency since demonetisation which was two-and-half-years ago. They added that the accused would sell Rs 1.25 fake notes for Rs 60,000 to his buyers. Cops said the accused was supposed to sell the fake currency to more than a dozen persons in Jodhan area, and the persons knew they were buying fake notes. They added that the accused might have been selling the fake notes in his native district.

SHO said they have secured the police remand of the accused from local court and will question him regarding where he procured the fake notes from and who did he sell it to usually. He added that once the accused reveals the names of his customers, they will also be questioned.
Police said the accused was into dairy business, but suffered losses because of which he started this illegal business of dealing with fake currency.
