JALANDHAR: BSP supremo Mayawati’s decision to appoint her brother Anand Kumar as vice president and his son Akash Anand as national coordinator of the party is drawing mixed reaction from BSP supporters and Dalit activists of Punjab. Some have criticized the move and some have supported the move.
Several have taken to the social media to question the move that ensures familial domination over the party.
In Punjab, BSP has managed to reverse its eroding support base in this parliament election by forging alliance with PDA.
Several BSP supporting Punjabi netizens have highlighted the contrast between Mayawati’s latest action and party founder Kanshi Ram’s approach — he never promoted his kin in the party. Those questioning the decision also include NRI supporters, who have been funding the party.
US-based supporter Amar Daroch took a dig at Mayawati on his Facebook. “Familial control is not good for a party which rose from andolan (agitation). When own family members have first second and third positions then where is the space for others? If Akash Anand will work on ground, he is welcome but if he would hold meetings in AC halls of big hotels after reaching there in AC cars and would return like coordinators from UP, then party can’t be strengthened,” he wrote, but also added “This should not be considered opposition to the party but it is expression of the pain of all those who have been working hard for the party.” Several BSP supporters who had commented on this post were against the decision but some supported it as well.
Another netizen recalled a big rally in Ropar when party workers brought Kanshi Ram’s mother to the stage, which angered the party supremo.
However, some netizens also pointed out that with this decision Mayawati has cleared the air about the apprehensions that Satish Mishra will take over the party. Meanwhile, Bamcef activist Ranjit Kumar expressed his displeasure at BSP workers and supporters taking to social media to discuss the issue. According to him, they should share their concerns within the party and not social media.
