More names crop up for Akali MP candidate from city
Ludhiana: As the senior Akali leadership begins the process of finalising candidates from the city for the parliamentary polls, more names have cropped up among the probables, with a section of supporters within the party pitching in for some younger candidates.
Speaking to TOI, a senior party leader confirmed that SAD’s Ludhiana president Ranjit Singh Dhillon, and Student Organization of India (SOI) — the party’s youth wing — president Parminder Brar were also in the running for a ticket, though both leaders claimed otherwise.
The development comes in the wake of an announcement by senior SAD leader Bikram Majithia on Monday, during his rally in Ludhiana, where he had conveyed he would ensure younger leaders are considered for the candidature.
Dhillon has been a one-time MLA from Ludhiana East, and in the last elections, he lost to Congress party’s Sanjay Talwar. On the other hand, Brar is known for his proximity to Majithia, and has been closely associated with the party’s student and youth wings. Brar, however, claimed he had not even applied for the ticket. “I have not applied for a ticket from Ludhiana, but if my party decides to give me any such responsibility, I will be more than happy to take it,” he said.
Party insiders said a section within the party had expressed reservations over the winnability of senior leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal, and some local workers had given a feedback in favour of Dhillon and Brar. The final call, however, will be taken by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal, who had earlier shown an inclination to field Grewal.
Speaking to TOI, Dhillon said: “We are supporting Maheshinder Singh Grewal for the MP’s ticket from Ludhiana, as he is a very senior figure. But any decision taken by our party about the MP candidate — be it Grewal, me, or any other candidate — will be acceptable to us.”
