Poll results show Congress on the upswing
LUDHIANA: The Congress party made a record of sorts by winning all the seats of Zila Parishad and securing more than 80% seats of Panchayat Samiti after the counting of votes ended on Saturday night.
In Zila Parishad elections, Congress won all the 25 seats, while Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and others could not secure any seat. Among the winners, Ramneet Singh Gill won the Chak Sarwan Nath seat with a maximum margin of 7,420 votes.
He secured 17,405 votes, while his nearest rival Harinder Singh could get 9,985 votes. Apart from Kheernian, where Congress candidate Karam Singh beat Gurcharan Singh of SAD by a thin margin of 861 votes; in Dhandran, Baldev Singh of Congress defeated his nearest rival Man Singh of SAD by 925 votes. In Bija, Harbans Kaur of Congress defeated Jasvir Kaur of SAD by 1,024 votes.
In Manuke, Darshan Singh of Congress party who had secured 10,492 votes, defeated his nearest rival Chand Singh of SAD by 1,818 votes, while SAD (Amritsar) got 3,293 votes. Of the 236 Panchayat Samiti seats, Congress walked away with 195 seats, while SAD won 33, followed by Independents who won 8 seats.
While providing information about the Panchayat Samiti results of 236 zones, the election authorities said that the Congress won in all 15 zones of Dehlon Panchayat Samiti; Congress (16) and SAD (1) in Doraha, Congress (19), SAD (2), and Independents (4) in Jagraon; Congress (12) and SAD (3) in 15 zones of Khanna; Congress (17), SAD (7), and Independent (1) in Ludhiana-1; Congress (21), SAD (3), and Independent (1) in Ludhiana-2, Congress (13), and SAD (3) in Machhiwara; Congress (13), SAD (1) and Independent (1) in Malaud; Congress (12), and SAD (4) in Pakhowal; Congress won all 15 zones of Raikot; Congress (9), and SAD (6) in Samrala; Congress (13) and SAD (2) in Sidhwan Bet; Congress (20), SAD (1), and Independent (1) in Panchayat Samiti Sudhar.
Harmandeep Singh Kular of Congress won from Kular seat with a maximum margin of 1,561, defeating Gurjit Singh of SAD. On Dhanansu seat, Balvir Singh of Congress defeated his nearest rival Balwinder Singh of SAD by 1,533 votes, as he secured 2,482 votes. Among the seat that witnessed the tightest finish, Ranjit Kaur of Congress defeated her nearest rival Paramjit Kaur of SAD by just two votes on Pohir seat, as Ranjit secured 1,458, Paramjit got 1,456 votes. On Sihan Daud seat, Bhinder Singh of SAD defeated his nearest rival, Jagtar Singh of Congress, by nine votes, as Bhinder got 1,150 votes, Jagtar got 1,141.
