Punjab: Army roped in for plugging in breaches, IAF to drop food packets in flood hit areas of Jalandhar
Marooned villages of district Jalandhar
LOHIAN (JALANDHAR): With nearly 30,000 acres of land submerged in water of more than 50 villages in the district due to eight breaches along river Satluj, Jalandhar deputy commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma has sought help of the Army for plugging in the breaches.
"Army has been called in to expedite the work of plugging all the breaches. One column of Army has already reached Phillaur and two have reached Lohian for help.
Every effort would be made to ensure that the life and property of the people was safeguarded at every cost,” he said.
As several people have not left their homes despite repeated efforts by the district administration, latter has now sought help from Indian Air Force to airdrop food packets to the needy people. “The work of airdropping food packets would start from Wednesday early morning to ensure maximum relief to the people,” Sharma said.
Meanwhile he said that ten teams of Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force were working to evacuate stranded people. “Teams of the Revenue and Police officials have been constituted to provide food and help to the stranded people,” he added.
