Train runs over man at Ladhowal crossing

Ludhiana: A train ran over a man while he was crossing the tracks near Ladhowal railway station on Sunday morning.
Government Railway Police assistant sub-inspector Sukhminder Singh said, “The man, who seems to be around 50-year-old, is yet to be identified, as no documents were found on him. He was crossing the tracks when a super-fast train hit him in Ladhowal.It was an unmanned crossing.”
The body will be kept at civil hospital for 72 hours for identification.
Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
Government Railway Police officials said in the past one week, five people lost their lives while crossing tracks in Ludhiana. Every year, around 300 to 350 such deaths were reported.

The railways have made a big effort to remove unmanned crossings in the country in the last one year. If there were 3,479 unmanned level crossings on broad gauge routes on April 1, 2018, a bulk were eliminated in successive months, according to the railways. These were removed by providing subway/road under bridges or by manning. The process should be further hastened to bring down the accident figure. The pedestrians and motorists, too, should abide by the law by not trespassing on railway property or trying to jumping over gates of closed crossings.
