Two-member NGT team inspects projects in Patiala

PATIALA: A two member team of National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday conducted an inspection in Patiala and reviewed the progress of establishment of solid waste management plant in the city. The team also visited some sites where first of kind projects including door-to-door garbage collection and underground bins project in the city.
The team pointed out several improvements are needed in some projects.
The team checked if directions of the NGT were being followed by the corporation or not.
The team members comprised NGT chairperson Rajwant Sandhu and Dr Puran Singh, joint director, Swachh Bharat mission. The team also inspected the cleanliness projects of the civic body. The corporation officials gave a presentation about their several developmental projects. The officials explained about their compost project at New Yadvindra colony where the garbage has been segregated to further make compost for the farmers. The NGT team advised the Patiala municipal corporation officials to prepare and sell the compost to farmers after making some improvements.
They directed the civic body to follow guidelines of solid waste management other than covering the whole garbage dump yard at Sanauri Adda with soil. The corporation will now cover the garbage dump and segregate the waste, produce manure from biodegradable waste and sell the plastic and non-biodegradable waste. City mayor Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, said that the team has directed us to set up the solid waste management plant by October 2019 and issued guidelines over the project for covering the garbage dump at Sanauri Adda.
Besides this, the team visited various sites including Government Polytechnic College and New Yadvindra Colony at Nabha Road to look into the segregation of waste.
