Karnataka: Heavy rains continue to lash coastal districts

Heavy rain has continued to lash the coastal districts of Karnataka. In 24 hours ending 8.30am on Friday, Kukkehalli in Udupi recorded the state’s highest rainfall of 189 mm. Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka up to 8am on Saturday.

MANGALURU: Heavy rains have continued to lash the coastal districts of Karnataka. In 24 hours ending 8.30am on Friday, Kukkehalli in Udupi recorded the state’s highest rainfall of 189 mm. Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka up to 8am on Saturday.
In Dakshina Kannada, Padangadi recorded the highest rainfall of 125mm during the same time while Kodkani marked a rainfall of 113mm in Uttara Kannada.

Udupi recorded an actual rainfall of 55.7mm, a departure of 17% from the normal of 47.5mm. Dakshina Kannada saw an actual rainfall of 72.8mm, the normal being 38.8%, a departure of 88%, while Uttara Kannada witnessed an actual rainfall of 29.8mm, a departure of -5% from the normal rainfall of 31.3mm.

The maximum temperature in Dakshina Kannada ending at 8am on Friday was 28.4°C and the minimum temperature 23.1°C. In Udupi, the maximum temperature was 29.2°C and minimum temperature was 23 °C. Uttara Kannada recorded a maximum temperature of 27.9°C and minimum temperature 22.9 °C.
INCOIS Hyderabad has sounded a high wave alert for the coast. High waves in the range of 3.5 – 4.4 metres are forecast during 5:30pm on Thursday to 11.30pm on Saturday along the coast of Karnataka from Mangaluru to Karwar. Current speeds vary between 60 - 107cm/sec.
Strong winds generally from westerly direction, speed reaching 40-50kmph gusting to 60kmph are likely along and off the Karnataka coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off Karnataka coast.
