Karnataka: Nine-member committee to probe harassment alleged by pregnant woman in quarantine

MANGALURU: Deputy commissioner, Daksina Kannada - Sindhu B Rupesh has set up a nine-member committee under IAS officer Snehal Rayamane, managing director, Mescom to look into a complaint of physical and mental travails faced by a pregnant woman while in institutional quarantine.
The woman had returned to Mangaluru on May 12 from Dubai and was denied admission in a private hospital due to her Covid-19 negative status and at her apartment here as well.

The woman had to stay in a lodge due to these issues, according to a complaint by Abdul Aziz Bastikate resident of Gandhi Park, Uppinangady lodged with the district administration. According to medical experts whom the administration consulted on the woman's condition, who was in advanced stage of pregnancy, medical termination of pregnancy was the only way out that they could save her life. She had a stillbirth after which she alleged of being ill-treated.
DC in an administrative development related to the pandemic has notified Kenjar Tangadi, Barke in Muloor village and Sarapady Badagulipadi village, all in Mangaluru taluk as containment zones in connection with P-2287-90, P 2474 and P 2473 respectively on May 27, 28 and 29. While the executive officer of Mangaluru taluk panchayat is incident commander for first containment zone, the executive engineer of panchayat raj engineering division for the other two zones.
The district as on May 28 has 59 active cases and total positive cases stand at 99. In all, 39 patients have been discharged thus far and the district has recorded seven deaths including one due to non-Covid reason and other a case of cirrhosis of liver. Out of 8,263 samples sent for testing, 8,158 have turned out to be negative and 105, including eight from other districts positive. Reports on 593 samples are still pending, the DC said.
