MUMBAI: In the first mega-recruitment drive launched during the Fadnavis government’s tenure, Maharashtra has received close to 8 lakh applications since late December for approximately 4,400 jobs in Class III and Class IV posts.
The highest number of applications have been received for the post of a forest guard—for the 1,218 posts available, the state has received 4.3 lakh applications, which roughly translates into 353 applications per post.
The job requires the candidate to have passed the 12th standard exam.
Experts say the deluge of applications points to the paucity of private sector jobs for candidates from tier-2 and -3 towns who form the bulk of the applicants.
Lack of skill sets to compete for openings in the private sector and the ‘status’ which a government job bestows are also seen as contributing to the demand.
Kishore Tiwari, an agriculture expert working in drought-prone districts, said in the rural belt, government jobs are seen as a ‘lottery’. “Once you get in, your entire life is sorted. Even if it is an entry level, job it comes with a social symbol and drastically changes the standard of living of the family,” said Tiwari.
In all, this year, the government has announced that it plans to fill 72,000 positions that were lying vacant for several years. The 8 lakh applications received so far are in response to the first set of advertisements issued for seven departments.
