MUMBAI: The
Autorickshaw unions on Sunday had a major meeting in Mumbai and they have announced an
indefinite strike which could cripple the
road lifeline of the city and rest of Maharashtra.
"More than 10 lakh auto drivers across Maharashtra, including two lakh in Mumbai alone, will go on indefinite strike from July 9 if our demands are not fulfilled,'' warned Mumbai Autorickshawmen's Union leader
Shashank Rao, who along with several unions held a meeting on Sunday.
Rao stated that the demands included a fare hike of Rs 4 per km as drivers had not got any raise in fares for more than three years. Other demands include
welfare scheme, weeding out illegal autos etc. The unions will meet state chief minister
Devendra Fadnavis and transport minister Diwakar Raote, and have given an ultimatum till June 30. The union activists will also hold 'melavas' in Pune, Nagpur and other places across state to voice their demands.
