NAVI MUMBAI: With a dip in temperature and uptake in retail demand, prices of eggs have shot up by around Rs 10 to a high of Rs 70-80 in Bandra and Rs 72 in Goregaon. At Vashi bazar, the rates hovered around Rs 65-70 a dozen.
A leading wholesaler and exporter from Chennai—a major poultry centre in the country—who supplies poultry products to Mumbai, said, “Hens lay fewer eggs during monsoon.
Besides, the export market is also good. Prices of eggs could shoot up in the next few months until the end of the season. Local retailers agree.”
Sreedhar of Srisuktam Solutions, Chennai, told TOI: “Currently, the base price of eggs is Rs 4.5 apiece here and scales up to Rs 4.9 apiece factoring transportation cost and other costs in Mumbai. The base price before monsoon was Rs 4.25 a piece. The price could go up to Rs 5.10 a piece during the next few months until monsoon.’’
Sreedhar further said that there is “good demand” from Oman, followed by Qatar, Dubai and some African countries. Chennai exports eggs and poultry to 80 countries.
Prices, said retailers, would be high until Shravan when many stay away from meat. Shravan sets in early for north Indians towards the end of July while in the state it is a month later, in August.
