MUMBAI: Extensive power cuts were witnessed in Mulund, Bhandup, Thane, Kalwa, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli and Vasai-Virar on Wednesday as MSEDCL opted for a “preventive forced shutdown” of 60 sub-stations as the storm raged, and at least two dozen electricity poles were damaged and wires affected by tree-falls, report Somit Sen and Pradeep Gupta.
In Mumbai, except for blackouts at some places, power supply was uninterrupted, especially at hospitals.
“There were minor power cuts in some parts of the city. But we ensured no patient or healthcare professional was inconvenienced. We also operated more buses (1,700 vehicles) to ferry essential staff and had kept several Quick Response Team vans along with generators on standby,” said a senior BEST official.
Power supply was also affected in some parts of Vasai and Arnala but Palghar reported no disruption.
Scores of citizens complained of not being able to use broadband or wifi and that affected work from home. Many tried the customer care numbers of power firms, but in vain. In Mulund-Bhandup, serviced by MSEDCL, there was no power for six hours. “The extent of damage, whether any transformer, feeder or equipment was hit due to the heavy winds and rainfall, is yet to be assessed and will take some time. Till then, we are providing electricity from alternative sources to those affected,” said MSEDCL chief spokesperson Anil Kamble.
At Raigad district, as many as 46 sub-stations were shut to prevent damage and power outage continued in the areas almost throughout the day. “Preventive forced shutdown is better than having more damage and losses and taking longer time to restore supply,” said a government official.
