MUMBAI: A fortnight after his election to the upper house, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray is up against another test as the nomination of eminent persons to the legislative council by governor B S Koshyari is imminent.
The governor appoints 12 persons with special knowledge or practical experience in fields such as literature, science, art, the co-operative movement and social service.
The tenure of eight members is to end on Saturday and of two on June 15.
Two had resigned after the assembly polls. So, the cabinet must submit a list of 12 eminent persons to Raj Bhavan soon.
Cabinet members said the governor and the chief minister were at loggerheads on key issues and the approval of any list of 12 that Thackeray submits may not be a smooth affair. “The governor will have to satisfy himself that the names submitted by the CM really have special knowledge of the subjects mentioned in the Constitution. The governor may send back the list to the CMO for more information or verification,” a cabinet member said.
It is understood that MVA constituents Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena will get four seats each. “We will soon submit the list of NCP nominees,” NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said.
A Congress minister said it was expected that Thackeray would convene a meeting of the coordination committee to finalise the list. “We expect to complete the exercise in a day or two and then the CM will personally submit the list to Raj Bhavan,” the minister said.
Members retiring on Saturday are Husnabanu Khalipe, Janardan Chandurkar, Anandrao Patil and Ramhari Rupnavar (all Congress), and Prakash Gajbhiye, Vidya Chavan, Khwaja Beg and Jagnnath Shinde (all NCP). Retiring on June 15 are Anant Gadgil (Congress) and Jogendra Kawade (People’s Republican Party). Rahul Narvekar and Ram Wadkule had quit after the assembly polls.
