MUMBAI: Looks can be deceptive. A 42-year-old widow who always feigned a "lonely, sad" disposition has been taken into custody by the railway police for allegedly stealing valuables from women on trains between Gujarat and Mumbai.
The police recently recovered stolen ornaments that the accused, Laxmi Waghela, a Surat resident, had sold to a jeweller.
On January 23, a woman commuter lodged a complaint that a gold chain and cash were stolen from her handbag.
A few people from the coach, including Waghela, were detained. A railway police official said that she has confessed to her involvement in the crime.
"She targets women with large handbags. She discreetly steals ornaments, cash or any valuables," said a police officer.
The police said that Waghela's co-travellers did not suspect her as she used to pull a long face. Waghela, who has lost her husband and son, would sell the booty to jewellers, telling them that she needed money for her son's medical treatment.
After stealing, she would return to Gujarat, said assistant commissioner of railway police Sujata Patil. Waghela has been booked on three other occasions, said investigating officer Irfan Nadaf.
