MUMBAI: Passengers in the Dadar-Madgaon Jan Shatabdi Express created a ruckus on Wednesday after some of them spotted the pantry staffers using "contaminated water" in the preparation of tea and coffee. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has denied the claim.
The Jan Shatabdi, that runs between Mumbai and Goa, has AC and non-AC coaches but no pantry car.
So, in three coaches, the space between the entrance and toilet is used by staffers to prepare hot beverages, said sources.
"Some passengers saw dirty water being used to prepare tea and coffee and raised an objection. We found that the pipeline of the tap which was spewing brown water was also connected to the toilets," said Agnelo Fernandes, who was in D-7 coach. "I called for the train ticket examiner who noted my complaint and informed the assistant commercial manager. The train officials ordered the pantry vendor to stop serving beverages. The vendor is supposed to carry 25 litres of purified water to prepare beverages, which was not done in the Jan Shatabdi." A video clip of the ruckus on the express train has gone viral.
Konkan Railway's assistant commercial manager AD Meena said, "The pantry operator has denied having used dirty water for the preparation of tea and coffee. But we have sent a sample of the water to the forensic laboratory for quality check."
IRCTC spokesperson Pinakin Morawala said, "The video regarding Jan Shatabdi is a malicious one created..to incite the public. It is mentioned on the boiler in the video that it is 'not in use'. Moreover, in the video, water is hardly flowing from the tap, which proves that the boiler was not filled...No catering staff or pantry car vendor is seen taking out water from the said unit or making tea. The tea urns with water are normally taken from originating points-Dadar and Madgaon. For additional requirement, two boiler units in the train are operational."
