PATNA: A masked man decamped with Rs 65 lakh kept in the locker of a mall on Fraser Road under the Kotwali police station area in Patna on Monday.
The incident took place between 2am and 3am. The locker was on the fourth floor of the mall, which is within a stone’s throw of Dak Bangalow crossing where police generally patrol throughout the night. In an FIR lodged with Kotwali police station, mall manager Suraj Shah claimed that Rs65 lakh was stolen from the locker, DSP Rakesh said.
Police sources said the CCTV footage shows the man going inside the washroom on the back side of ground floor at 10.56pm.
His face was partially covered with a piece of cloth. He is seen coming out of the washroom at 1.56am and going upstairs. Since there is no shutter on the fourth floor, he walked up to the locker and opened it with the keys kept there itself.
“There are three lockers but the man opened only one and came downstairs with the cash in a bag. He came out of the mall through the front gate which was surprisingly not locked and four private security guards were there on duty. When the guards saw the man coming out, they allegedly chased him, but the burglar managed to escape,” City SP (central) Amarkesh D told this newspaper. He said the security guards were being interrogated.
Patna SSP Garima Malik said, “We are conducting raids to nab the criminal. The police are also questioning some suspects and staff of the mall. There are chances that the theft was committed by someone who worked there and was aware of everything,” the SSP said.
