PATNA: One can soon get information about trees, including their age, lifespan, botanical name, common name, blooming season and benefits by just scanning QR codes tagged on them with their smartphones. The Patna forests division is in the process of equipping trees with QR (quick response) codes. To begin with, QR codes will be installed on trees at Rajdhani Vatika, popularly known as Eco Park, in Patna.
A specially designed software, which will work on any free QR reading mobile application, can be used to scan the barcodes.
The system will also help identify felling of trees.
“The initiative is aimed at making people aware about the importance of trees. We will also launch a website containing information about the parks where QR codes will be installed on the trees,” Patna divisional forest officer Hemant Patil said, adding the project will gradually be implemented at Rajgir and Valmiki Tiger Reserve.
Eco Park in Patna houses more than 2,000 plants with medicinal value along with peepal and banyan trees. It also has a two-km-long jogging track. The park was inaugurated by CM Nitish Kumar on March 23, 2010. According to sources, the average monthly footfall of visitors at Eco Park is around 60,000.
