SAHARSA: Police unearthed large scale illegal trade of narcotic substances, such as opium and bhang in a fish market on D B Road in heart of the town.
The illegal trade was unearthed when SDO Prashant Kumar and SDPO Prabhakar Tiwary raided the residence and business premises of Mohammad Sajjad on Wednesday evening. The SDPO said on Thursday that police recovered around 10kg of opium and other narcotic substances as well as Rs 2.5 lakh in cash from the residence of Sajjad, the kingpin of opium trade in Kosi region.
Sajjad, however, managed to escape.
Police sources said Sajjad’s two brothers are in Saharsa divisional jail for smuggling of narcotics. “The recovery of 10kg of opium hints towards the possibility of intensive opium cultivation in some parts of Kosi region. The recovery is only a tip of the iceberg as the entire Kosi riverine area is dotted with smuggling of narcotics,” said a police official.
