PATNA: Work on construction of four more Picture used for representational purpose only under the Centre’s Namami Gange programme is nearing completion. The Karmalichak and Beur STPs are likely to be ready by the end of this month and the Pahari and Saidpur STPs by November this year.
“If everything goes according to plans, the Karmalichak and Beur STPs will start functioning from October this year,” said a senior Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (BUIDCO) official.

“The sewer lines will cover every household. Once the Karmalichak and Beur STPs start functioning, sewage water from Karmalichak, Beur and adjoining areas will not flow into the Ganga,” the official added.
BUIDCO executive engineer Yogendra Kumar said the Karmalichak sewer network will be 97km-long and it will generate 37 million litre of fresh water per day against the existing 4 MLD. The sewage network at Beur, on the other hand, will be about 180km-long and it will generate 43 MLD of fresh water against the existing of 20 MLD.
The city’s sewage network is currently insufficient to receive heavy downpour, said the executive engineer. “The STPs will treat the sewage water discharged from the households through sewage network and convert it into fresh water. The fresh water will later be released through Badshahi Nullah into the agricultural farms at Brahmapura, Mithapur and Punpun,” Kumar added.
He said, “The STPs at Karmalichak and Beur will come up with an estimated expenditure of Rs 77 crore and Rs 68 crore, respectively.”
The foundation stone for the STPs and other projects worth Rs 738.04 crore was laid by PM Narendra Modi at Mokama in October 2017.
Ayaz said the other two STPs at Pahari and Saidpur will be completed by November and it will start functioning by next year. He said the proposed sewage plants at Kankerbagh and Digha would cost Rs 1,834 crore.
