PATNA: Two premier engineering colleges in the city – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Patna and National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Patna – have set up help desks to guide the candidates in selecting the right engineering branches and technical institutions across the country based on their ranking in Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
The institutes will facilitate the process for allotment of seats through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for admission to IITs, NITs, Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other government-funded technical institutions.
JoSAA has been set up by the ministry of human resource development to manage and regulate joint seat allocation for admissions to 107 technical institutes.
Candidate registration and choice filling for academic programmes under JoSAA will end on June 25 while the first round of seat allocation will be held on June 27. The verification of documents for the first round will be done at the reporting centres, including IIT-Patna and NIT-Patna, between June 28 and July 2.
Chairman of IIT-Patna JEE centre Sudhan Majhi said the helpdesks have been set up to give students and their parents more information about the IITs and help them in selecting suitable branches and institutes. The IIT has also provided helpline numbers to candidates for raising queries,” he said.
The students will be enrolled in IITs on the basis of their JEE (Advanced) ranking. NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes admit students on the basis of JEE (Main).
Majhi said on the day of reporting, candidates will have to fill the freeze, float or slide option to choose academic programme and institute. “There will be 12 to 15 verification centres at IIT-Patna,” he added.
Under freeze, one accepts the offered seat and don’t want to participate in further rounds of seat allocation. If a candidate accepts the seat but indicates that if admission to an academic programme of better preference in any institute is offered, they would accept it then candidates will be considered as floating candidates. Sliding option indicates that if admission to an academic module of better preference is offered within the same institute, they will accept it.

NIT-Patna officials said seven rounds of seat allocation exercise will be conducted by the JoSAA till July 19 and two special rounds by Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) till July 23. “These two special rounds are especially for admissions to NITs and IIITs,” the official added.
As per the Centre’s announcement, 10% reservation will be provided to students from economically weaker sections (EWS) for admission in technical institutes. Similarly, 14% seats will be allocated for the female candidates under supernumerary quota.
