PATNA: The
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Patna has, for the first time, made it to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)
BRICS University Rankings 2018, securing 108th position. Over 300 universities from five
BRICS countries – India, China, Russia, South Africa and Brazil – have been observed and graded for the QS ranking, one of the global prestigious rankings.
Altogether 74 universities and institutes from India have featured in the QS rankings this year.
The IIT-Patna has been ranked 16th among all Indian universities and ninth among all the IITs. The universities are ranked on several parameters, such as academic reputation, employer reputation, international student exchange programme, faculty staff with PhD, faculty-student ratio, papers per faculty, among others.
IIT-Patna’s overall score stood at 37.2 out of 100. The institute scored 60.2 in faculty-student ratio, 100 in staff with PhD, 44.7 in citations per paper and 76.3 in papers per faculty – all scores out of a maximum of 100. Among all parameters, faculty staff with PhD emerged as the strongest factor for IIT-Patna.
“Credit for the institute getting such a ranking goes to students and faculty for their contribution in innovation and research,” IIT-P director Pushpak Bhattacharyya said.
“It is really an honour to be recognised and awarded for the work being done at the institute. We certainly would like to do better in the coming years,” he added.
Currently, 800 undergraduates are enrolled in 10 departments of the institute – computer science and engineering (CSE), electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical and biochemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics and humanities and social Science.
