SAMASTIPUR: The CPI-ML has threatened to launch an agitation if the state government and its agencies failed to come to the rescue of impoverished vegetable farmers who are forced to sell their produce at throwaway prices.
Former district president of CPI-ML Surendra Prasad Singh said, “The farmers of Samastipur, particularly vegetable growers are in trouble due to the greed of the wholesalers who force the poor peasants to sell their produce at throwaway prices.
The worst part is that though farmers sell their produce at cheap price but the end consumers are forced to buy vegetables here at high rates for their daily consumption,” he said adding if the state government and the district administration fail to come to the rescue of farmers, the party will launch an agitation in the district.
Bramhdeo Singh, a farmer who sold his produce at Motipur vegetable market on Wednesday morning to the wholesalers said they are selling their produce at a very low rate. “Cabbage is being purchased by the wholesalers at the rate of Rs 2 per kg, brinjal at the rate of Rs 3 per kg, pumpkin at the rate of Rs 3 to Rs 5 per kg,” he said adding, “In retail market, all these vegetables are sold not less than Rs 20 per kg.”
To add to the problem is the payment of Re 1 per kg to the person who takes the contract for the market place. “If we add the cost of labour and transportation, we are at loss. The government should look into the matter and protect the farmers,” said Singh.
