PATNA: DGP Gupteshwar Pandey on Monday said that some police officers are trying to demoralise the police force, which has its cascading effect on the law and order situation in the state.
The DGP’s utterances came barely 24 hours before CM Nitish Kumar is scheduled to review the law and order situation on Tuesday, the second one in a fortnight. He said that he had been trying hard to change people’s perception about police and also rein in unlawful activities of the men in uniform.
Pandey held a meeting with top police officers on Monday and told them to prepare for the ‘uncomfortable’ questions to be raised by the CM.
Despite CM’s strict warning, there has been no let up in the incidents of crime in most parts of the state. A section of police officials sought to known why action had not been taken against the 40 DSPs whose performances were found not up to the mark during their assessment ahead of the last review meeting held on June 7. Moreover, police chiefs in districts, who were found to be vulnerable from security point of view, had not been shifted.
The audacity of the criminals can be gauged from the fact that a group of robbers barged into a jewellery shop on busy Ashina-Digha road in the state capital in broad daylight and decamped with booty worth over Rs.4 crore last week. A 15-year-old boy was kidnapped from Ghorsahan police station area in East Champaran district on Monday.
In Munger also, an employee of a private firm was robbed of Rs.6.31 lakh in cash when he was going to deposit the money in a bank on Monday. A truck driver was shot dead in Patna City’s Alamganj police station area on Monday. Reacting to these incidents, the DGP said, “Only a handful of criminals are involved in the crime. They will also be brought to book at the earliest.”
In order to rein in outlaws, the DGP carried out surprise inspection of police stations in different districts at night. Disciplinary action was initiated against some police personnel found to be lax in duty. “Some police officials are trying to pour cold water on sincere efforts to change the people’s perception,” Pandey said on his twitter handler.

Additional chief secretary, home department, Amir Subhani and the DGP Pandey, at a joint press briefing on June 7, had said that Patna under Patna division, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali under Tirhut division were identified as the worst crime prone districts from where majority of the cases were reported.
A senior IPS officer, who was present at the previous review meeting, however, quoted the CM as saying, “Hame shabd nahi action chahiye (I don’t need words, I want action).” The CM has taken such a hardline with the police officials after a long time.
