PATNA: Muzaffarpur police failed to arrest any criminal in connection with the murder of former mayor Samir Kumar and his driver Rohit Kumar on Sunday evening. Two-bike-borne criminals had sprayed bullets from AK-47 rifle on them near Banaras Bank Chowk under the Muzaffarpur Town police station area.
Muzaffarpur SSP Harpreet Kaur said the murder was a fallout of property dispute and police had found some clue about the criminals involved in the killings.
The SSP said Samir owned a mall at Muzaffarpur and was a property dealer.
A special investigation team (SIT) was formed on Monday under Muzaffarpur SP Upendra Kumar Verma. Town DSP Mukul Ranjan and Town police station SHO Md Shujjauddin are the other members of the SIT. The CCTV footage retrieved from the crime scene has been scrutinized.
Shujjauddin said raids were being conducted to nab the shooters. “A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has gathered found some clue from the spot,” he added.
Samir and his driver Rohit were gunned down when they were returning home at Mithanpura PNT Colony from a hotel. Both were declared brought dead at the Muzaffarpur sadar hospital.
The police recovered 17 empty cartridges from the spot. The locals claimed the criminals sped away towards Sikanderpur after committing the crime.
The incident created panic among the shopkeepers and the markets across Muzaffarpur remained closed on Monday. The angry mobs burned tyres on major roads and shouted slogans against the state government. They also hampered the traffic movement.
Samir was to planning to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election from a national party.
