PATNA: Sounds strange, but at least two postgraduate self-financing courses of Patna University (PU) did not have a single aspirant for admission this year. The last date for submitting online application for admission to the two courses — MSc in herbal chemistry and PG diploma in population education — ended on Saturday. Both are supposed to be ‘sunrise’ courses elsewhere, but there are no takers in PU.
Some other self-financing courses, too, have failed to attract the minimum desired number of applicants in order to sustain.
For instance, PG diploma course in applied criminology has got only one application, while PG diploma in remote sensing and GIS could get only three. PG diploma in financial services and MA in women’s studies also received seven and eight applications respectively.
The department heads running these courses would have hard nuts to crack owing to their economic non-viability. As neither the state government nor the university provides any financial assistance, the courses would have to be discontinued, said a senior academic.
In regular (conventional) PG courses, the number of applications received for admission to MA, MSc and MCom are 3523, 2803 and 1184 respectively. Since admission to these courses would be made on the basis of marks obtained in the last qualifying examination, the list of candidates selected for admission as per reservation roster would be published on June 20 onward.
Meanwhile, PU has opened its online admission portal once again for seeking fresh choice of reservation (10%) from general category students from economically weaker sections for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Economically weak students from general category can indicate their choice for 10% reservation till June 18. PU had already conducted the centralized entrance test for admission to the Degree Part I honours courses in arts, science and commerce streams, but withheld publication of results due to receipt of a directive from the state education department for implementing the new provision of 10% reservation for the poor general category students from the current session itself.
Patna College, Patna Science College, B N College, Magadh Mahila College and Vanijya Mahavidyalaya would announce their lists for admission on June 20 onward. The PG departments would also declare their list at the same time, said PU students’ welfare dean N K Jha.
