Patnaites upset over demolition of Gole Market
The Gole Market, a century-old heritage building constructed as Patna’s first planned municipal market, has been demolished by local authorities as part of the Smart City project. Patna Municipal Commissioner Anupam Kumar Suman, said, “The market has been demolished as part of the smart city project. A seven-storeyed commercial complex will be built at the same place and a new municipal market will be constructed.
The smaller shops will also be demolished in some time.”
Designed by architect Joseph Fearis Munnings, the Gole Market was a municipal market of the colonial era. Patnaites are heartbroken to the see a heritage building getting demolished. Prabhu Choubey, a historian, said, “Instead of demolishing it, the authorities should have planned to renovate it and create a new market in the adjoining areas. This was one of the landmarks of this area and we were used to seeing it for so many years. I don’t know why the government is not interested in preserving old buildings of the city. A couple of years back, old Patna Collectorate buildings were also demolished. It is very disheartening to see such changes.”
Patnaites are clearly unhappy with the move. RK Singh, a retired government employee, said, “I cannot forget its beautiful red-coloured roof. It was very attractive. I wish it could be preserved. This is a very disappointing move by our government. After all, it was a heritage building. Our future generation will not get to see anything of those times.”
