PATNA: The residents of state capital and several other places in central, north and south Bihar got the much-needed respite from scorching heat conditions as dust storm and thunderstorm along with lightning hit the region on Wednesday.
Cool northerly winds blew at the speed of around 30-50kmph along with cloud cover and light showers from 3:30pm to 5pm. Patna too witnessed gusty winds along with showers for around 20 minutes around 4pm.
Patna meteorological centre had issued a weather warning at 3:10pm that radar observations were indicating thunderstorm, lightning with light to moderate showers associated with wind speed of 30-40kmph for two hours at Patna, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Begusarai, Nalanda, Nawada and Gaya among several other places.

Weathermen attributed the turbulent weather to convective currents formed due to excessive heating and mix of hot and cool winds at different levels of atmosphere. “Such sudden weather turbulence in the pre-monsoon period normally happens in this part of the country due to excessive heating. Such activities have been reported from north and central Bihar over the past few days owing to high temperatures in the region. Its intensity totally depends upon moisture feeding in the system. If the moisture level is high, then the convective current become stronger and cause thunderstorm as well. In case of low or mild moisture feeding, it occurs in the form of dust storm and lightning,” said Pradhan Parth Sarthi, president of Patna chapter of India Meteorological Society.
Residents also heaved a sigh of relief from the scorching heat as the thunderstorm led to plunge in temperature as well. “The weather was quite hot from past couple of weeks and such breezy weather came as a big respite. I went to the roof with my sister to enjoy the cloudy and windy weather,” said Samiksha Mishra of Ashiana Nagar.
Pre-monsoon thunderstorm notwithstanding, weathermen claimed that onset of southwest monsoon in Bihar is likely to be delayed further owing to formation of cyclone
Vayu in Arabian Sea, which is expected to cause widespread rainfall in Gujarat, Maharashtra and several other states in peninsular India over the next few days.
“Cyclone Vayu is likely to suck majority of the moisture towards itself, which will slow down the progress of monsoon current in north-eastern and eastern India. Thus, onset of monsoon in Bihar is likely to be delayed even beyond June 20,” Sarthi said.
Monsoon normally hits Bihar through north-eastern districts of Purnia and Kishanganj around June 10-12. However, this time the monsoon could only manage to enter Mizoram and parts of Manipur in the northeast till June 10 and it is almost stagnant since then.
