PATNA: Opposition RJD on Monday staged a daylong protest across the state over children’s death due to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES).
RJD state president Ram Chandra Purbey demanded chief minister Nitish Kumar’s resignation for deteriorating law and order, drought-like situation in several parts of Bihar, lack of safe drinking water and poor infrastructure in government hospitals and primary health centres in the state.

RJD MLA Alok Mehta flayed Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan for his failure to fulfil his promises made in 2014 when he had visited Muzaffarpur to review the AES cases following children’s death.
“Dr Vardhan had promised 100-bed paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and a research centre at SKMCH. Had the research centre been opened, at least the cause of deaths would have been known,” Mehta said and added, “The saddest part is that PM Narendra Modi had time to visit Jharkhand to perform yoga, but did not have time to meet the families of children who died due to AES or those who were undergoing treatment.”
RJD women cell state president Abha Lata said the state government should address the problems being faced by litchi farmers as no one was buying their fruits after AES outbreak. “Litchi trade has badly suffered and farmers are in dire straits. Even law and order situation has worsened and crime against women has increased during CM Nitish Kumar’s regime,” she said.
RJD district presidents submitted a memorandum to the district magistrate of their respective areas. RJD state spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said a copy of the memorandum will also be given to the governor.
“Either we will march to Raj Bhavan or a delegation of RJD legislators will meet the governor with the memorandum. We will also raise the AES issue in the upcoming monsoon session,” Gagan said.
At Bagaha, RJD members alleged that people admitted in government hospitals were not given proper treatment. They also raised the issue of lack of irrigation facility near the Gandak canal and drying up of hand pumps. A similar protest was also held near Thana Chowk in Purnia, as well as other districts of the state.
