PATNA: One Mahadev Gupta, a sweet shop owner, was shot at by two motorcycle-borne criminals near Kachauri Gali under the Chowk police station area in Patna City late on Sunday night.
The incident took place around 10.30pm when Gupta was returning home from his shop, which supplies delicious ‘khurchan’ (a kind of sweet made of milk in different parts of the country and abroad).
The assailants intercepted Gupta a few yards away from the Chowk police station and fired at him, causing bullet injuries in his armpit.
While the attackers escaped on their motorbike after the incident, 30-year-old Gupta was rushed to the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital where his condition is stated to be stable. Police said a dispute over payment of money is stated to be the reason behind the murderous attack on Gupta. The locals told the police that Gupta owned the sweet shop in the locality for decades.
“VIPs like CM Nitish Kumar, deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi and road construction department minister Nand Kishore Yadav have enjoyed delicious ‘khurchan’ sweets from Gupta’s shop,” said a police officer who had earlier served as the station house officer (SHO) at the Chowk police station in Patna City sub-division.
The incident has sent shock waves among the members of the business community, who have demanded immediate intervention of the senior police officers posted at the police headquarters.
On Saturday, a 35-year-old mansion identified as Sunit Kumar was shot dead by unidentified armed criminals near Nakhaspind under the Malsami police station. The police, however, said the incident was fallout of a land dispute. Police have failed to make any breakthrough in the case so far.

Deputy inspector general (central range) Rajesh Kumar on Monday visited Patna City and inquired about the two incidents. Sources said the DIG warned the SHOs of the Chowk and the Malsalami police stations of stern disciplinary action if they failed to nab the criminals in the two incidents at the earliest.
Police arrest notorious criminal: Police arrested a notorious gangster, Dularchand Yadav, from his native village under the Barh police station in Patna rural on Saturday night. His two grandsons were taken into custody for interrogation.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Barh ASP Lipi Singh raided Yadav’s house and nabbed Dularchand, whose name once spelt terror in Barh-Mokama Tal area. Considered close to jailed RJD chief Lalu Prasad, Dularchand was wanted in three criminal cases related to land grab, extortion and attempt to murder.
