PATNA: The three-day 10th Patna Film Festival, called the Cinema of Resistance, began at Kalidas Rangalaya here on Sunday.
The festival, organized by Hirawal, a unit of Jan Sanskriti Manch, was inaugurated by Pawan Shrivastava, filmmaker and director of first independent crowd-funded film ‘Naya Pata’.
The first documentary screened at the festival was Sanjay Matru’s ‘Apni Dhun Me Kabutri’.
The documentary revolved around the life struggles of the famous folksinger of Uttarakhand Kabutri Devi. “Kabutri Devi was a great conversationalist. Her story depicts the gender struggles of each woman of this country. The way she used to tell her story was heart wrenching,” Matru said.
Asked about the impression the movie will make on the audience, he said, “I expect the audience to be more sensitive in their understanding of gender dynamics of our society. The documentary also portrays the power of resistance that does not require a huge feminist revolution but is possible at household level also”.
Festival convener Santosh Jha said, “It’s important for us to show resistance to the ones who are sitting in power. Cinema is a great medium to depict real life struggles of classes that are neglected and backward in the society. We are trying our best to become an eye-opener for our society”.
Shweta Kumari, a resident of Rajendra Nagar, was excited to be there as audience. “I am a fan of content-driven movies. It is great that our city is getting exposed to such excellent stories”.
Some of the movies which will be screened during the next two days include ‘Naach Bhikhari Naach’, a documentary based on Bhikhari Thakur, ‘Womaniya’, a documentary film of first all-women band of Bihar and ‘Ferdinand’ a Spanish animated movie directed by Carlos Saldanha.
