PUDUCHERRY:A second-year girl student from Assam was allegedly molested by two motorcycle-borne men inside Pondicherry University campus.
The police registered a case against the unidentified men on Tuesday after the student lodged a complaint.
Police said the student and her friend were going to their hostel when the two men on the motorcycle stopped them and started touching her inappropriately.
As the girl screamed the men fled the spot.
Police registered a case under Sections 354 and 354-A (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian penal code after the student lodged a complaint. They have secured footage of CCTV cameras installed inside the campus and are trying to identify the culprits.
The incidence of attack on students within the campus has been on the rise. Students held the university authorities responsible for the poor security measures. “There are only a couple of CCTV cameras at the two main gates in a central university where more than 7,000 students study. These cameras capture long view footage. Police say they are finding it difficult to identify the registration numbers of the vehicle of the molesters. Moreover, CCTV cameras were not installed at major points in the institution spread 800 acres,” said a student.

In a similar such attack a couple of months ago, motorcycle-borne men assaulted a girl student in the presence of a security staff member who remained a mute spectator and also refused to divulge details of the registration numbers of the bikes of her molesters. A first-year male student from Odisha was sexually abused by a gang of four men at knifepoint. The issue came to light only after the victim’s friend posted a message on the Facebook narrating the incident.
It might be recalled that Madras HC judge justice N Kirubakaran ordered police protection to the Pondicherry University after fights among the teaching and administrative staff and students following a petition from a student of the university.
