PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry government has proposed an international airport under public private partnership mode at Karasur here.
Chief minister V Narayanasamy told the media on Tuesday that revenue minister M O H F Shahjahan and Pipdic chairperson and DMK MLA R Siva mooted the proposal during an investors’ meet in Singapore.
The chief minister said he made an appeal to executives of the Meinhart group specialising in infrastructure development projects to invest in the expansion of the existing airport in Puducherry.
He said the group has already developed airports in India, including in Delhi and Hyderabad.
He expressed optimism that the proposed expansion of the existing airport and an international airport at Karasur will boost the economic growth of the Union territory.
Narayanasamy said the industrial giants who participated in the meet evinced keen interest in setting up an IT park, an industrial estate, tourism-related projects, including a mall, in Puducherry and glass manufacturing unit and super-specialty hospital in Karaikal.
“We will continue our talks in materialising the projects. A delegation from the branch office of an investor in Chennai will visit Puducherry. If necessary, we will also visit Singapore again. The glass manufacturing unit will provide employment to 800–1,000 people while the super-specialty hospital will give jobs to 300 to 400 people,” he said.
